چکیده
Common green lacewing, Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens) is an important predator that occurs naturally in many agricultural systems and feeds on large varieties of phytophagous pests including aphids, whiteflies and scale insects. In commercial insectaries, larval stage of this predator is usually reared on eggs of a factitious host, e.g., Mediterranean flour moth, Ephestia kuehniella (Zeller), because of its low rearing cost. The main objective of this study was to determine the preimaginal development and survival as well as adult longevity and fecundity of the predator feeding on eggs of E. kuehniella (ad libitum feeding) as larvae food and 20% honey solution as adults food under laboratory condition (25 ± 1˚C, 60 ± 5% RH, and a 16L:8D h photoperiod). Preimaginal survival rates were evaluated in 5 replicates of 30 predators (totally, 150 individuals) and developmental time, longevity and fecundity were subsequently assessed in at least 20 individuals. Feeding on E. kuehniella eggs resulted in high survival rate and short developmental time of preimaginal stages. High percent (95.64 ± 2.52) of the first instar larvae developed to pupa and 88.89 ± 4.8 percent of pupae emerged to adult lacewing. Means of larval and pupal developmental times were estimated as 7.67 ± 0.1 and 9.0 ± 0.13 days, respectively. Longevity of females (35.2 ± 1.52 days) was significantly higher compared with that of male adults (25.8 ± 2.08 days). Female lacewing laid 62.64 ± 2.53 eggs on average during its life time. Moreover, female pre-oviposition, oviposition, and post-oviposition periods were obtained as 4.2 ± 0.07, 13.3 ± 0.37 and 17.8 ± 1.67 days, respectively. In conclusion, high survival rates and short developmental times of preimaginal stages of C. carnea after feeding on eggs of E. kuehniella shows that this factitious host has high nutritional quality to lacewing and could be used for mass-rearing of the predator in insectaries.
