چکیده
The sandfly, Phlebotomus papatasi, is the main vector of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Iran. Parasitic mites have a broad distribution and are reported from different locations. Stigmaeid mites have been recorded as parasitic mites of Phlebotominae sandflies, and different species of Eustugmaeus mites have also been reported as parasitic mites of Phlebotomus and Sergentomya species. In this study we examined the parasitoid mites of sandfly Ph. papatasi in Mehran region of Ilam province, Western Iran. Sandflies were collected using the sticky paper traps in Mehran region during summer 2018. Male and female sandflies were collected and a total of 370 females were caught. Specimens were removed from sticky traps, transferred to tubes containing ethanol, and then carefully examined under a stereomicroscope. Head and genital areas were cut and mounted for species identification using a standard identification key. The abdomen of female specimens were separated and used for PCR assay to detect Leishmania parasite. During dissection of the samples, mites were identified on sandflies. The mites were isolated from infested sandflies, kept in ethanol and then mounted in Puri’s medium. Mites were identified using a standard identification key. Accordingly, the mite was identified as Stigmaeus sinai Swift,1987 (Prostigmata: Stigmaeidae). Mite’s species name was determined and confirmed by Dr. Hamidreza Hajiqanbar, Department of Entomology at Tarbiat Modares University, which we thank him for his kind cooperation. S. sinai had been reported as a parasite of Ph. papatasi from Saudi Arabia, India and Egypt. It was also reported as a parasite of Ph. alexandri in Fars province in Iran. However, this is the first record of parasitic mite of S. sinai from P. papatasi in Ilam province.
