چکیده
Xanthogaleruca luteola (Müller), the elm leaf beetle, causes huge damage to elm trees anually. Due to the usage of elm trees in urban green space, chemical control of this pest is associated with a lot of limitations. Preparation and use of safe, environmentally friendly and efficient alternative pesticides is necessary. Nowadays, the use of nano-encapsulation technology of pesticides causes increase in efficiency and controlled release of these substances. In this study, repellent activities of nano-encapsulated formulation (NEF) of wormwood sagebrush Artemisia sieberi Besser essential oil were investigated against the elm leaf beetle X. luteola (Muller). The experiments were conducted at 25 ± 2 °C, 65 ± 5% RH and a photoperiod of 16:8 h (L: D). To obtain repellency percentage, two hole was placed on two sides of a plastic container (cubed in a volume of 65 ml), and each hole was connected with a plastic tube of 3 mm in diameter and 2 cm in length to two other plastic containers of the same volume. The two containers located on the each side of the middle container, were considered as control and treatment. The mid-center was used as the base for releasing 10 adult beetles (after 3 hours of starvation). In the control container, a leaf was placed with one ml of ethanol 10% as a solvent for non-formulated essential oil and one ml of distilled water for nano-capsule treatment. In treatment containers, one ml of 3000, 4000 and 5000 ppm of nanocapsule formulation and 6000, 7000 and 8000 ppm of non-formulated essential oil were placed in the containers. The experiments were carried out at 1, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 hours independently. After thirty minutes, the insects in the side containers were counted and the repellency percentage was calculated according to the formula. The repellency of non-formulated essential oil at a concentration of 8000 ppm reached its highest level after 6 h exposure, while the repellency of NEF increased over time and reached to 100% after 24 h and continued for 72 h. Therefore, further investigations are necessary to consider the NEF made by the A. sieberi essential oil as an effective toxicant against the elm leaf beetle.
