Survey on insecticidal activity and sublethal effect of Mentha piperita and Satureja montana against cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hub.)Lep.; Noctuidae

Cotton bollworm, Helicoverp aarmigera Hubneris an important polyphagous lepidopteran insect pest of many agricultural crops distributed worldwide. Controlling this pest mostly relies on chemical insecticides that usually cause many environmental and health issues. Searching alternative environmentally friendly insecticides for controlling insect pests is necessary. Plant essential oils have shown a reliable pest control potential. The present work was carried out to evaluate the insecticidal and sublethal effects of essential oils from dried leaves and stems of Mentha piperita L. and Satureja montana L. against H. armigera. The bioassay tests were done on 3rd instar larvae by fumigant method in 40 ml vials. The LC50 values for M. piperita and S.montana were 185 and 30 µl (essential oil) / L (air), respectively. The results of the bioassay tests showed that S. Montana essential oil has higher toxicity against this insect. The sublethal effects studies were carried out by exposing 3rd instar larvae to LC30 concentration of either essential oil. Then some biological parameters of survived individuals including last instar larval weight, pupal weight, larval and pupal period, and fecundity of emerged adults were investigated. In general, the LC30 of both essential oil showed negative effects on biological parameters of survived insect after exposing to the oils. Sublethal exposure to the tested essential oils significantly increased larval (Control=19.68; Mentha=24.2 and Satureja=23.04 days) and pupal (Control=12.03; Mentha=14.62 and Satureja=13.62 days) developmental times and reduced their weights (larval weight: Control=257; Mentha=141.43 and Satureja=155.2 mg; pupal weight: Control=291.75; Mentha=213.65 and Satureja=198.6 mg), in comparison to control insects. Furthermore, the number of eggs laid per female (Control=405.6; Mentha=85.8 and Satureja=124.2) was negatively affected by the tested essential oils. These essential oils with high biological activities and insecticidal properties represent an alternative approach in the protection of greenhouse plants against H. armigera and also a great potential as part of an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy to manage this insect.
