Effect of high temperatures on different life stages of Mediterranean flour moth, Ephestia kuehniella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae

چکیده
The use of elevated temperatures or heat treatment is one of the practical alternatives to methyl bromide in stored product pest management. We determined mortality of eggs, 3rd instar larvae, pupae and adults of the Mediterranean flour moth, Ephestia kuehniella (Zeller), exposed to 45, 48, 50 and 52 °C; 40, 45, 47, 50 and 53 °C; 49, 51, 53, 56, 59 and 62 °C; and 45, 48, 50, 52 and 55 °C, respectively. Responses of the insects to the high temperatures were measured at 5, 8, 10, 14, 18, 23 and 30 min intervals. Twenty individuals of each life stage were treated for each treatment. Bioassays were repeated three times at different days. The treated insects were kept in laboratory conditions (30 ± 2 °C, 65 ± 10% RH and 14:10 h (L:D) photoperiod for 24 h after thermal treatments, then the mortality was recorded. Lethal temperature for 50% of the tested population (LT50) of the eggs, 3rd instar larvae, pupae and adults at 30 min intervals were 48, 50, 53 and 52 °C, respectively. Moreover, lethal time for 50% of the test population (LT50) of eggs, 3rd instar larvae, pupae and adults at 55 °C were 12, 14, 22 and 11 min, respectively. Mortality of all studied life stages of E. kuehniella increased with an increase in exposure time and temperature. According to the results, egg was the most susceptible stage to elevated temperatures and the pupae were the least susceptible stage. These results can be used in control programs of E. kuehniellain in stored products.
