چکیده
Cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is one of the most important pests of agricultural products throughout the world. In the current study, life history parameters and biology of A. gossypii were determined on cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. cv. Negin), squash (Cucurbita pepo L. cv. Clarita) and common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Sunray) at 25 ± 1 ºC, 70 ± 5% RH and 16:8 h L:D. The experiment was started with 150 individuals of the first instar nymphs of A. gossypii and the age-synchronized aphids were established on the host plant leaf discs in Petri dishes with 6 cm diameter. The different instar nymphs and adults of A. gossypii on each leaf disc were monitored daily and the number of produced offspring was separately recorded until the adult aphids died. After data analysis, the developmental time of immature stages of A. gossypii was estimated 5.55 ± 0.10 days on cucumber, 5.17 ± 0.06 days on squash and 5.07 ± 0.07 days on common bean. Also, the reproduction period and adult longevity of the pest were significantly higher on cucumber (17.13 ± 0.35 and 20.98 ± 0.47 days, respectively) compared with those on squash (15.53 ± 0.41 and 19.13 ± 0.53 days, respectively) and common bean (15.55 ± 0.54 and 17.59 ± 0.64 days, respectively). The intrinsic rate of increase (r), net reproduction rate (R0), finite rate of increase (λ), mean generation time (T) and doubling time (DT) of A. gossypii were determined to be 0.3322 ± 0.0065 day-1, 43.02 ± 2.68 female offspring / female, 1.394 ± 0.0001 day-1, 11.32 ± 0.003 day and 2.09 ± 0.0006 day on cucumber, 0.3917 ± 0.0056 day-1, 56.20 ± 3.20 female offspring / female,1.479 ± 0.0001 day-1, 10.29 ± 0.002 day and 1.77 ± 0.0003 day on squash and 0.3310 ± 0.0066 day-1, 42.42 ± 2.71 female offspring / female,1.392 ± 0.0001 day-1,11.32 ± 0.003 day and 2.09 ± 0.0006 day on common bean, respectively. Based on the results, squash and cucumber were the most preferable host plants for rearing A. gossypii in comparison with the common bean. Consequently, the present results could be useful in rearing programs of A. gossypii for mass propagation of aphid biological control agents.
