چکیده
Olive psyllid, Euphyllura straminea Loginova (Hemiptera; Aphalaridae) is the most important pest of olive plantations in Iran including Zanjan province. Currently, the most prevalent method in controlling the pest is the use of synthetic insecticides. Based on field observations, infestation of olive trees caused by the olive psyllid varies between olive cultivars. In the present study, susceptibility of eight commercial and promising olive cultivars including Zard, Conservalia, Arbequina, Picual, Cornicabra, Kaissy, Direh, and Kroniki was evaluated to olive psyllid. For this purpose, four trees from each cultivar were selected. The sampling and data collection were carried out from mid-January to late-June. Adults and nymphs on four young buds and flower buds were counted. The results showed significant differences between mean of olive psyllid nymphs population on olive cultivars (F = 31.52; df = 7, 21; P<0.000). The highest (20.77 ± 2.89 nymphs per flower bud) and the lowest (2.60 ± 0.51 nymphs per flower bud) mean olive psyllid population were observed on Arbequina and Direh, respectively. There were no significant differences between means of adults’ population on olive cultivars. Phenolic compounds could be effective in host preference of olive psyllid. Finding tolerable cultivars and cultivating them could reduce insecticide use in olive orchard. Therefore, lower level of insecticides application might be effective in conservation of natural enemies of olive psyllid
