Study of the existence of circadian rhythm in energy consumption of Aphis gossypii under two light conditions

Energy consumption (EC) in aphids, aphis gossypii, same as other organisms has occurred in all life span; but the amount of it is different depend on activity rate and life conditions. In an experiment, two light conditions consist of 16 hours light/8 hours dark (L:D) and constant light (L: L) designed to distinguish the effects of different times of circadian cycle on the EC and effects of endogenous circadian clock on this parameter. So the amount of EC has determined according to Coen-Janssen protocol at six time points as zeitgeber times including 0 (24), 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20. Results showed that the trend of both ECs is similar and the highest quantity is visible in ZT20. In L:D condition, ZT20 means midnight but at constant light condition, this time point is like a daytime. It seems that the control of circadian rhythm inEC is completely endogenous.Because insect reactions under LL condition are an index of endogenous clock effects and in spite of environmental light/dark cycle along centuries, there isn’t any conflict in fluctuation trends and the amounts of EC in L: D condition compare to L: L condition.
