چکیده
Ephestia kuehniella (Lep: Pyralidae) is rearing widely around the world as laboratory host for biological control agents such as Trichogramma spp. (Hym: Trichogrammatidae) wasps. Improving laboratory host performance is a key to increase efficiency of biological control agents. Increasing oviposition rate of laboratory host is one way to make biological agents price cheaper. It is proved that presence of some semiochemicals can increase oviposition rate. In this study, we used formic acid as a semiochemical. Experiments were carried out at 25±1°C, 65±5% RH and under photoperiod of 16L:8D in growth chamber. Formic acid was added in rate of 1% of medium growth amount in 30%, 60% and 90% concentration. As fifth star larva appeared, 30 males and 30 females from each treatment were collected and each pair placed in a petri dish which had filter paper soaked in formic acid (same concentration as treatment). When adults emerged, 72 hours had given to each pair for oviposition. After that, adults were removed and eggs were counted. Results showed that adults with formic acid treatment had significantly higher oviposition rate than control (60% concentration had higher effect than others). Average number of eggs per female in control was 55 but it was 107 in treatment of 60% concentration. So as our results showed, we can recommend adding formic acid to medium growth and oviposition site of E.kuehniella as stimulating factor for increasing oviposition rate.
