Demographic outcomes of treating all life stages of Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) by the pesticidal soap, Palizin®

The two-spotted spider mite, Tetranycus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) is a Polyphagous and cosmopolitan pest with high capacity of resistance development to many pesticides. Palizin® is a botanical soap with physical mode of action which is suitable regarding both environmental concern and no resistance risk by pests. Studying the effects of pesticides on life table parameters of pests is developing but most of such studies apply the treatment on one life stage. Because of stage overlapping in species like T. urticae, in this research all life stages were treated separately and the combined life table was constructed. Fresh and dry residues of the recommended dose of Palizin® were used as treatments. Distilled water was applied as the control. Experiments were done at 25±2ºC, 65±5% RH and 16:8h (light: darkness). Both treatments caused significant reduction in population growth rate compared to the control. The lowest intrinsic rate of increase (r) was found in fresh residue with the value of 0183 day-1. The rate for dry residue and control was 0.209 day-1 and 0.233 day-1, respectively. That was due to high pre-adult mortality and low fecundity in the treatments. The pre-adult mortalities in fresh and dry residues and the control were 56, 29.6 and 16.8 percent, respectively. Each female adult produced 49.77 eggs in fresh residue, 68.66 eggs in dry residue and 109.3 eggs in the control, during her life. Since the persistence of the residual effect of Palizin® is not remarkable, the controlling program of the mite could not be relied on using this compound alone. Studying the effects of Palizin® mixed with other pesticides as a way to decrease their application rate while achieving the desired control of the pest is suggested. Also its compatibility with major biocontrol agents of the mite pest is needed to be known.
