چکیده
Galleries and developmental stages of bark beetle species of the subfamily Scolytinae, which are considered as one of the destructive pests of forest and urban trees, provide diverse microhabitats for many species of mites. Coniferous trees are among the most cultivated species of urban green spaces in some regions of Iran, which may be infested by the Mediterranean pine engraver beetle, Orthotomicus erosus (Wollaston, 1857). This bark beetle species is considered as the most important xylophagous pest of pine trees in Iran, and widely distributed in some central and northern provinces of the country. Up to now, nine species belonging to eight families of mesostigmatic and oribatid mites have been reported in association with O. erosus in Iran. During 2012–13 and in order to identify mites associated with the Mediterranean pine engraver beetle in Markazi Province, mite samples were taken from galleries of the bark beetle species in infested parks and forests of north and west regions of the province, including Saveh, Mahallat, Khomeyn, Delijan and Khorheh, using Berlese-Tullgren funnel. The specimens were cleared in a clearing medium, then mounted in Hoyer’s medium on microscopic slides, and finally identified using reliable references. A total of 10 species, belonging to nine genera and seven families, were identified as follows:
Mesostigmata: Laelapidae: Gaeolaelaps nolli (Karg, 1962); Sarcoptiformes: Oribatida: Astigmatina: 1) Acaridae: Acotyledon dolichos Ashfaq and Sarwar, 1999, Tyrophagus sp., Sancassania sp.; 2) Histiostomatidae: Histiostoma sp.; Trombidiformes: Prostigmata: 1) Bdellidae: Spinibdella cronini (Baker and Balock, 1944); 2) Ereynetidae: Ereynetes (Anereynetes) sabinensis Baker, 1945, Ereynetes sp.; 3) Tarsonemidae: Heterotarsonemus magowskii Khaustov, 2001; 4) Tetranychidae: Bryobia sp.
This research increases the number of the mite species and families associated with the bark beetle in Iran to 18 and 14, respectively.
