چکیده
Yield-loss assessment is a crucial concept in insect pest management programs. Such assessment is hard to access with natural insect populations. To overcome the problem, sometimes simulation of pest damage will be solution. The vegetable leafminer, Liriomyza sativae Blanchard (Diptera: Agromyzidae) attacks a large number of plants, preferably Cucurbitaceae, Leguminosae, and Solanaceae. In this study damage of the leafminer was simulated by cutting off cucumber leaves (cultivar Simensis) at different intensities using a puncher with determined area. A completely randomized design including 21 combinations of damage intensity × attack time in four replicates was adopted. The yield was recorded as kg fruit per plant during a growing season. The damage was defined as mm2.d, then linear regression was adopted for drawing yield over damage. A significant yield loss was observed beyond 10500 mm2.d (F=125.6, df=1:18, P<0.001, R2=0.875), while the lower damages were tolerated by the plant. It was concluded that cucumber plants may tolerate low level damages, but higher levels will cause significant injury to the crop. The results are subject of uncertainty risen by substantial difference between sudden cut off in simulation trials and slow nature of the pest damage along with insect secretions.
