چکیده
Diamondback moth Plutella xylostella L., currently is one of the most serious pests of Brassicaceae in Iran. The larvae of this pest cause damage on these plants by feeding from their leaves. In the present study, biology of the pest and effectiveness of ionizing radiation using Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) in order to manage diamondback moth is studied. The effect of gamma irradiation at doses 100 to 300 Gy on reproductive parameters was determined. The mean percentage of pupal mortality and emerged abnormal adults increased with increasing doses. There were differences between the control treatment and doses of 150 Gy and higher for this character. The mean percentages of male and female pupal mortality were 47.22±11.38 and 44.19±13.54 for different doses, respectively. This result shows the adverse effect of irradiation is more pronounced on the male than on the female pupae. The number of laid eggs per female decreased significantly as the irradiation dose increased. This value was 229.8, 169.0 and 370.5 eggs at 250 Gy for irradiated male, female and both sexes respectively compared to 490.80 eggs in the control. Percentages of hatched eggs at 250 Gy in different crosses (Irradiated Male × Irradiated Female, Irradiated Male × Normal Female and Irradiated Female ×Normal Male) were 0.18%, 1.24% and 3.63% respectively. This value in all crosses reaches to zero at 300 Gy. The results of this study showed that a dose of 250 Gy is the appropriate sterilization dose for parental generation of both male and female sexes.
