چکیده
The genus Psyllopsis Low, 1879, is represented by 5 species in Iran. It is a plant sap-sucking insect mainly associated with Ash trees, all important amenity and landscape trees. The European psyllid, Psyllopsis discrepans which attacks Fraxinus spp. has been introduced into North America where it has become a serious pest in some areas. The objective of this study was to recognize the psyllid, which causes damages on the narrow-leaved ash, F. angustifolia, in Kermanshah. The infested twigs of F. angustifolia including galls on leaves and buds were cut and observed under a Stereomicroscope. Pysillid specimens were then removed and placed in 75% ethyl alcohol. Later, several specimens were mounted on microscope slides. Some efforts were made to identify the sample using a compound light microscope and the relevant literature. Finally, Psyllid specimens were sent to Prof. David Mifsud for definitive identification. P. discrepans is a European psyllid, which is here newly recorded from Iran on F. angustifolia Vahl. (Oleaceae). Females are 3 - 4 mm in length and yellow to orange in color , with a black bandon each abdominal tergite. Wings are held roof-like over the body at rest. The species feeds on swollen buds and leaves of the ash tree and causes serious damages. Including rolling and folding of the leaves, marginally. The rolled leave gradually become thick and gall-like and turn pink, to brown, giving an unpleasant view to the trees. The nymphal instars remain sheltered inside the rolled leaves and secrete larg quantities of whitish filamentous wax. Inside each rolled leaf, there is a larg round drop of honey-dew.This species originated from Europe but it has now been introduced into numerous countries in many of which it has become a serious pest; for example, in the North America, Middle East, Caucasus and Turkey. It seems now to be a serious pest of F. angustifolia in Iran.
