Effect of different plant species on demography factors of tomato leaf miner, Tuta absoluta (Lep: Gelechiidae) in laboratory condition

Tomato leaf miner, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) is one of the destructive pests of Solanaceous crops specifically tomato in the world. It is an oligophagous pest that originated from South America and passed some outbreaks in fields and greenhouses of Iran, recently. The pest with 10-12 generation and impose irreparable damage to the host plants. The purpose of this study was evaluation of the survival rate, fecundity, life expectancy and sex ratio of tomato leaf miner on four host plants including tomato Lycopersicum esculentum, Mill. (c.v. CH Flat), potato, Solanum tuberosum L. (c.v. Marfona), eggplant, S.melogena L. (c.v. Roand darioun-623) and tobacco Nicotina tabacum L. (c.v. Verjinia) under laboratory conditions (25±1°C, 60±5% R.H. and 16:8 D:L of photoperiod). Adult moths were collected from fields in Khuzestan province and reared on four host plants for two generations in germinator and the cohort eggs of third generation were used in the experiments. Petri dishs containing the eggs of the pest on host leaves were monitored for emergence of adult insects daily. Experiments were performed in 50 replications. Chi theory and TWO SEX - MS Chart program were used to data analysis. The statistical comparisons were carried out by using paired bootstrap test method. The survival rate of the insect on tomato, potato, eggplant and tobacco were 0.83±0.07, 0.85±0.06, 0.79±0.08 and 0.88±0.06 respectively. Fecundity rates were 43.08±2.90, 25.56±0.8, 19.91±0.9 and 19.08±0.5 egg and sex ratio were 66.00±5.10, 70.10±4.48, 72.00±2.00 and 61.29±3.20 present (female/total). The results showed a significant difference between the parameters on the tested host plants. The life expectancy was reduced in the first day of life of the pest in all tested plans. The results indicated that the pest may become a serious pest of potato, eggplant and tobacco plants as well tomato. Also the results can be used to implement a successful pest management.
