چکیده
Introduction:
The presence of drain flies in healthcare services such as hospitals make it as a potential mechanical vector of nosocomial infections especially fungi. According to this Cladosporium fungus can produce cutaneous and subcutaneous diseases in human, thus aims of this study were to isolate and identify Cladosporium spp. as opportunistic fungi that probably present on external and internal surfaces of the flies.
Materials and methods:
From June to September 2016, adult flies were collected directly from their resting sites using sterile test tubes, in 2 hospitals of Babol county, North of Iran. Identification of adult drain flies was performed in accordance with a standard taxonomic key. Samples were isolated from the cuticular surface and gut of the flies, and were cultured on sabouraud dextrose agar medium supplemented with chloramphenicol and incubated at room temperature up to 2 weeks. Identification of Cladosporium were performed based on dark chained spores on conidiophore presentations (tree like).
Results:
Totally , 39 adult drain flies were caught from the hospitals and their specimens were examined. All drain flies were identified as Clogmia albipunctata. Results showed that 20 % flies were contaminated for Cladosporium spp. Infection rates in cuticular surface and gut were 25% and 75%, respectively.
Discussion:
Although, sample size were small but the findings of this study suggest that moth flies may play a role as mechanical vector of nosocomial infectious agents in healthcare services. Therefore, further studies are necessary in order to conclude association between moth flies and nosocomial infections. Also use friendly environment measures such as reduction of breeding places and physical methods is necessary for suppression of insects that active in hospital conditions.
