چکیده
Mosquitoes affect the health of people and animals as vectors of diseases such as encephalitis, malaria, dengue, chikungunya, Zika virus and yellow fever. Ecological and behavioral studies on mosquitoes are very important in the vector control programs. Among mosquito species, some members of Anopheles hyrcanus group are known as vectors of malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases in the world. An. hyrcanus are found in the Caspian Sea littoral, northern Iran. This study was carried out to detect some aspects of ecology and behavior of An. hyrcanus in north of Iran. We selected three sites in Babol County. Elevation of sampling sites ranged from -10 to +1500 m above sea level. Adult mosquitoes were collected using total catch method from May to October 2015. They were identified using systematic keys. Results showed that An. hyrcanus was active from the end of May till early in October, with one peak of activity in mid-July. There were also An. pseudopictus and An. maculipennis s.l among samples collected during this study. Due to the roles of mosquitoes in transmission of diseases it is necessary to determine fauna and biology of mosquitoes and their relationship to pathogen transmission in different ecological zones. Therefore, further studies are recommended to determine ecology of Iraninan species of Culicidae
