چکیده
Background: Mosquitoes are potential vectors of some important diseases for humans and animals. Some arboviral and parasitic diseases are transmitted by Culicidae mosquitoes in Iran, including West Nile and Sindbis viruses, Malaria and Dirofilaria. The objective of this study was to get new data about the species composition and monthly prevalence of mosquitoes, which would be valuable to develop programs for future provision of mosquito controls in the study area.
Materials and methods: During April to September 2013, larvae of mosquitoes were collected from four sites in Nurabad County, north of Fars Province using dipping method.

Results: During this investigation, totally, 1433 larvae of mosquitoes belonging to 3 genera and 11 different mosquito species were recognized, namely, Anopheles dthali, An. fluviatilis, An. stephensi, An. superpictus, Culex mimeticus, Cx. perexiguus, Cx. pipiens, Cx. sinaiticus, Cx. torrentium, Cx. modestus and Culiseta longiareolata. This study is the first survey of Culicid mosquitoes in the County.

Conclusion: Regarding this research, there are some potential vectors in medical and veterinary importance in Nurabad County and results of the present study may serve as a basis for risk assessment of emerging mosquito-borne diseases in future.
